Scientifically Accurate!

Mon Dec 8, 2008, 5:33 PM
So I had this whole long rant written out about the fat people in Wall-e and bone loss in microgravity and the sheer facepalmage induced by some people in my class, but I realized nobody cared so I deleted it.

While writing it, however, I realized that I often complain about lack of scientific accuracy. The truth is I have no problem with scientific inaccuracy. As a want-to-be sci-fi writer, I pull laws of physics out of my ass all the time. It makes for more fun stories if I don't have to take a break from the plot to explain in gory detail how warp tunnels work. The problem I have, though, is scientific inaccuracy that is misleading. I don't think anyone really thinks that warp tunnels exist. But some people really DO think that what happened in Wall-e could really happen in real life, right down to the ship that goes BEYOND THE DISK OF THE GALAXY for a simple planned five year cruise to chill while the earth is cleaned up by robots who for no reason suddenly acquire human emotion.

Don't get me wrong. I love Wall-e. But I do not take it as a flawless statement of scientific accuracy.

But now I am ranting about Wall-e again. Damn.

The gist of my former rant was this: Bone loss in microgravity will not make you fat. It will make your bones suck. But chances are you'll look pretty much the same, but with crappy bones. The people in Wall-e were fat because they sat in hover-chairs and drank milk shakes all day.

That is all.
